In October 1977, I was offered an in-house-editor job for the Spanish Television network “TVE” in Barcelona. I learned to cut reports and documentaries on 16 mm reversible film for immediate transmission. In spite of full time work, I managed to complete my studies at the Universidad Central de Barcelona where a got a Degree on English Literature in 1983. Those were formative, hard working years, combining both my interests in Cinema and in English Literature. I cut my first feature in 1979, “Nemo” by Jesus Garay. In 1984 the Spanish Television offered me a 5 chapter TV series “Las aventuras de Pepe Carvalho” directed by the Argentinean director Adolfo Aristarain. In 1988 realizing I could no longer combine my career as film editor with my full time editor post on TVE I resigned to dedicate all my time to cutting feature films, which is my vocation. Although mostly uncredited I have been lucky enough to cut films at a time where editors in Spain were not only film editors but also sound editors, which meant not only dialogue but also effects and music editing. It made me realize the hidden value of sound to disguise a bad cut or to manipulate time and pace, but most important of all to manipulate the picture in creative ways so as to excite emotions in the audience. Although no longer sound editor of my films, I still think in terms of sound.
